Types of cyst :

Commonest. Occur naturally every month. Can dissolve with medication

Haemorrhagic cyst / functional cyst

Dermoid / Endometriotic
/ Mucinous or serous cystadenoma

Non-cancerous but need surgical excision

Ovarian Cancer

Need extensive evaluation and treatment

What if I don’t remove the cyst?

Increase in size: Some grow quickly to occupy the whole abdomen making you look like a pregnant woman.

Torsion: Some cysts may turn around itself, giving rise to episodes of pain, fever and vomit. This may compromise the health of the ovary and usually is dealt with on priority in emergency.

Rupture: Burst in the abdomen giving rise to severe pain and need to be dealt with on priority in emergency.

Infertility: They alter the local hormonal balance and can cause infertility

Treatment Options

Medical : 

  • Yes some cysts can be treated medically. Depending on the size and nature of your cyst, your gynaecologist will be the best judge to decide

Surgical ( Laparoscopy / robotic) :

  • This procedure removes the unhealthy ovarian tissue and preserves the normal parts of the ovary.
